Directions

  1. 1. Build the Flavor Base

Melt the butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 5–7 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

  2. 2. Brown the Meat

Add the ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with the onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Pour in the liquid smoke and Worcestershire sauce, then continue cooking until the meat is fully browned. Tip: If using ground turkey, there's no need to drain the meat since it produces very little grease. If substituting ground beef, drain any excess fat before moving on.

  3. 3. Add the Beans

Pour both cans of baked beans into the skillet and stir until everything is well combined.

  4. 4. Season & Sweeten

Add another sprinkle of onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir in another splash of liquid smoke, the Worcestershire sauce, and the dark brown sugar until everything is evenly incorporated.

  5. 5. Stir in the BBQ Sauce

Pour in about half a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's Honey BBQ Sauce and mix until the beans are fully coated.

  6. 6. Simmer

Reduce the heat to low and allow the beans to simmer uncovered for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken and become rich and glossy.

  7. 7. Serve

Remove from the heat and let the beans rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm with your favorite barbecue classics or comfort food favorites.

Chardonnay’s Signature BBQ Baked Beans

There’s nothing like a big pot of homemade BBQ baked beans simmering on the stove. Sweet, smoky, savory, and loaded with seasoned ground turkey, this recipe has become one of my go-to comfort food sides for cookouts, family dinners, holidays, and potlucks. The combination of rich barbecue sauce, dark brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and a touch of liquid smoke gives these beans a slow-cooked flavor without spending all day in the kitchen.

Whether you’re serving them alongside ribs, burgers, grilled chicken, or hot dogs, these baked beans are guaranteed to disappear fast!

Chardonnay’s Cozy Tip

The longer these beans simmer, the deeper the flavor becomes. If you have extra time, let them cook on low for up to 45 minutes for an even richer, slow-cooked taste.

Variations

  • Substitute ground beef or smoked sausage for an even heartier version.
  • Add crispy bacon for extra smoky flavor.
  • Stir in diced jalapeños if you like a little heat.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top before serving for a comforting twist.
  • Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, warm over low heat on the stovetop or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each round.

These baked beans also freeze well for up to 3 months.
