If you were to ask me why I love to cook, my answer wouldn’t start with a recipe.
It would start with my grandmother.
Her name was Sue Belle Jefferson, and some of my favorite memories growing up were made in her kitchen.
Sunday Dinner at Grandma’s
Every Sunday after church, our family would gather at my grandmother’s house for Sunday dinner.
And when I tell you she could COOK… she could cook!
The collard greens would be so good. The fried chicken was always on point. And her cakes? She made everything from scratch. There was just something about the food coming out of her kitchen that made you feel loved before you even took your first bite.
But looking back now, I realize it was never just about the food.
It was about being together.
We would sit around the table, laugh, catch up, and talk about everything going on in our lives. She would ask us what we learned at church that Sunday, and somehow those simple conversations became memories that have stayed with me all these years.
And, of course, nobody was leaving Grandma house empty-handed.
She was always sending us home with goodies.
A sweet potato pie.
A Little Debbie cake.
Some leftovers.
A little bit of this and a little bit of that.
She always made sure there was something for us to take home.
That was her way of showing love.
And I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was learning something that would eventually become a huge part of who I am.
Food was love.
“That One’s Gonna Be a Great Cook One Day.”
As I got older, my mom told me something about my grandmother that I will never forget.
She told me that my grandmother once looked at me and said:
“That one’s gonna be a great cook one day.”
And honestly?
Those words stuck with me.
Even though I didn’t necessarily know what my future with food would look like, I think a part of me carried those words subconsciously.
Because food kept finding its way into my life.
Food Has Always Been Part of My Journey
Before I ever had Chardonnay’s Cozy Kitchen, I was finding ways to share food with people.
In middle school, I was selling candy.
In high school, I was selling plates.
I made fruit cups and sold them to my dad’s coworkers.
Later, I found myself cooking for my coworkers, taking orders, baking things, and bringing food to people simply because I wanted to.
It became one of the ways I expressed myself.
One of the ways I connected with people.
One of the ways I showed love.
Eventually, I even went to culinary school.
I spent about a year to a year and a half there, and while I learned a lot, I eventually realized that the traditional culinary environment wasn’t necessarily where I belonged.
I’m a very free-flowing person when it comes to creativity.
I don’t want cooking to feel like something I’m simply repeating over and over again.
I want to cook with love. I want to cook with intention. I want to create.
Most importantly, I want my food to touch people.
Why I Created Chardonnay’s Cozy Kitchen
That’s really where Chardonnay’s Cozy Kitchen comes from.
It’s my love of food, but it’s also my opportunity to do it on my terms.
I’ve always wanted a place where I could keep all of my recipes.
My family is constantly asking me:
“Can you send me the recipe for this?”
“How did you make that?”
“Can you give me that recipe again?”
And I always thought it would be so cool to have one place where I could simply send them a link and say, “Here you go!”
But it’s bigger than that for me.
Chardonnay’s Cozy Kitchen is my little baby.
It’s a place where I get to cook for others, share recipes, spread love, and hopefully bring a little happiness to someone’s day.
Because let’s be honest—the world can be a lot sometimes.
Life can be stressful. People can be tired. We all have days when we just need something that feels good.
And I’ve always believed that food has a way of bringing people back to the table.
It gives us a reason to slow down.
A reason to gather.
A reason to talk.
A reason to laugh.
A reason to make memories.
And that’s what I want Chardonnay’s Cozy Kitchen to be.
More Than Recipes—A Legacy
One of the biggest reasons I started this journey is because I want to leave something behind.
I want to build a collection of recipes that my family can come back to for generations.
I want my future children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and family members to have something they can look at and say:
“This is Chardonnay’s recipe.”
I want my recipes to live beyond me.
And, one day, I would absolutely love to have my own cookbook.
But for now, this website is the beginning.
It’s my way of putting my recipes somewhere they can be found, shared, enjoyed, and passed down.
It’s my way of leaving my stamp on the world.
And maybe, in some small way, continuing what my grandmother started in her own kitchen.
Because when I think about my grandmother, I don’t just remember what she cooked.
I remember how she made us feel.
Loved.
Welcome.
Full—not just in our stomachs, but in our hearts.
And that’s the kind of feeling I hope to create here.
The Heart of My Kitchen
When I think about what makes a kitchen the heart of a home, I don’t think it’s the appliances.
I don’t think it’s having the biggest kitchen or the fanciest dishes.
I think it’s the people.
It’s the stories.
It’s the laughter around the table.
It’s the recipes that get passed down.
It’s the person who makes sure you have something to take home.
It’s the memories created over a meal that you don’t realize you’ll treasure until years later.
That’s what my grandmother gave me.
And that’s what I want to give to you.
Through every recipe, every dessert, every cozy meal, and every story I share here, I’m hoping to create a little piece of that same feeling.
A place where you can come as you are.
A place where you can find something delicious.
A place where you can create memories with the people you love.
A place where food isn’t just food.
It’s connection.
It’s comfort.
It’s love.
And for me, that’s what Chardonnay’s Cozy Kitchen will always be.
A little piece of my heart that I can share with the world.
And if my grandmother was right all those years ago when she said I was going to be a great cook one day…
Well, Grandma, I hope I’m making you proud. ❤️
Come Into My Kitchen
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for supporting my little dream and becoming part of the Cozy Crew.
And who knows?
Maybe one of these recipes will become a favorite in your family, too.
Because that’s the beautiful thing about food.
You make it in your kitchen…
You share it with your people…
And somehow, it becomes part of a story that lasts.
There’s always room for one more at my table. 🩷
With love,
Chardonnay H.
